Who Learns Dorn?
The Dorn Method is relativly easy to learn and only requires a short learning curve. This makes it open and freely available to everyone,
there are no requirements other than an eagerness to learn this wonderful therapy.
Indeed, some people simply wish to learn Dorn from a personal perspective in order to treat themselves, family and friends. It's also been heard that
in Germany, Dorn Method self-help exercises are now taught in some Kindergartens.
The Dorn Method's short learning curve and simplicity however is also one of it's great strengths, making Dorn an excellent and easy to add 'bolt-on' skill.
As a result of this, professional Complementary Therapists from all disciplines, and increasingly even some General Practitioners
are adding Dorn to their skill set, enabling them to help more people instead of turning them away or refering them on.
What does Dorn Training involve?
Dorn training usually begins with a minimum 2-day workshop. A quality workshop which can be approved by the DMTA should provide
all the necessary techniques and information needed to begin practising Dorn, and be accredited by a recognised organisation such
as the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT) or the Complementary Therapists Association (CThA).
After the initial workshop, students are expected to attend practise days
and/or an advanced workshop to further increase their experience and knowledge. A selection
of case studies, normally around 20 (treatment/client combinations), are also required
leading to a competency review at one of the practise days. Each training provider
will differ slightly in their approach and requirements, however those described here are
the required minimum that the DMTA advises for reasons of public safety and to set a minimum
standard of professionalism.
Can I really practise Dorn after a weekend course?
People are often surprised that a single weekend course is quoted as sufficient
for Therapists to practise Dorn, and perhaps even to achieve the desired results.
However note that the word practise does not necessarily mean charging clients
as a professional Dorn Therapist straight after the first Dorn Method Workshop or course - as it does indeed take time to become proficient
from experience. Certainly we expect all Dorn therapists to have the minumum training and experience as explained above.
There is also the question of public safety and therefore if a Complementary Therapist wishes to offer Dorn as a part of their
practice, they should undergo sufficient training and experience to satisfy DMTA miniumum standards and gain approval from their own Authorised Instructor.
Dorn however, if followed correctly is very safe indeed and excellent results can be achieved
very quickly, often with the first case study; however a student's existing qualifications,
skills, professional background and personal natural ability of course come into consideration.
How soon one can begin practising professionally really depends upon the above mentioned factors and the
students own determination and efforts to become a good Dorn Therapist.
What pre-requisites do I need to study Dorn?
Anyone can learn Dorn to treat family and friends, it doesn't have to be learned
for professional reasons. Complementary Therapists wishing to treat their Clients
are required by the FHT and CThA to have a massage qualification and Level 3 in
Anatomy and Physiology for insurance purposes. However
Dorn Method insurance can also be gained from other organisations if these particular
qualifications are not held and where the student has a different background.
How soon can I offer Dorn as part of my Practice?
Again as described above that will depend upon your existing skills, qualifications
and background experience. Insurance for practising Dorn is available to Therapists
after an approved training workshop and the above FTH/CThA pre-requisite qualifications
have been met.
To get a listing in the DMTA Dorn Method Therapists Directory students will need to complete
at least 20 case studies, attend at least one practise day or further training event such as an Advanced Workshop
before presenting themselves for a competency review to an Authorised Dorn Method Instructor who should issue further certification
and listing approval.
Where can I get Training?
The DMTA recognises Dorn training provided by Authorised Dorn Method Instructors.
These must have been authorised by Dieter Dorn himself or by other Authorised Instructors.
